영어를 읽고 말할 때 주의 깊게 생각하면서 할 부분

- 문장구조, 주어-동사 호응, 동사-목적어 호응, 수동/능동, 어휘, 문법요소, 모범답안을 기계적으로 외우지 않기

 

영어가 익숙해지는 팁

- 쉬운 글, 잘쓴 글을 반복해서 많이 읽어야 한다.

- 많이 쓰이는 일반적인 문장과 구조를 많이 쓰는게 좋음. 

- active vocabulary를 많이 익히는 것이 좋음. get, put 이런 동사들

- passive vocabulary에 너무 집착하지 않기! 

*passive vocabulary: 바로 튀어나오지는 않지만 읽거나 들으면 뜻을 아는 단어들

 

세계적으로 열 명 중 한 명이 왼손잡이다. 

Left-handed people are about 10% of the global population. 

-> 

1. One in ten people in the world is left-handed. 

2. One tenth of the world's population is left-handed. 

- ex) 세계 인구의 2/3가 아시아에 산다. : Two thirds of the world's population lives in Asia. (population이 단수이기 때문에 lives를 써야 한다.)

 

서구에선 10~12%, 우리나라는 5% 안팎이다. 

In Western, it's about 10 to 12%, and in Korea it's about 5%. 

->

1. Left-handed people account for 10 to 12% of the populations in Western countries and about 5% in South Korea. 

2. While 10 to 12% of Westerners are left-handed, the share(=the percentage=the number) is just 5% in South Korea. 

- 통계에서 account for 라는 동사 사용해보기! 

- 서구: western countries로 풀어서 써보기. Westerners 로 서양 사람들로 돌려서도 써보기. 

- 영어에는 물결표시가 없으므로 to 로 쓰든지 dash를 쓴다.

- 1, 2번 모범답안 모두에서 생략하는 방식에 주의하기!

왼손잡이는 소수집단이어서 오래전부터 차별을 받아왔다.

Left-handed people are a minority so that they have been discriminated for a long time. 

->

1. Being a minority, the left-handed have long been discriminated against. 

2. Being a minority, the left-handed have long faced discrimination. 

3. Being a minority, the left-handed have long been victims of discrimination. 

4. Being a minority, the left-handed have faced discrimination throughout history (=for much of human history). 

- 'minority라서' 를 being a minority로 풀어씀.

- the left-handed: the rich, the poor 와 같이 ~인 사람들

- discriminate는 늘 against와 함께 쓴다. ex. They discriminate against women. 

- This theory has long since been discredited. : long since를 같이 써주면 계속 discredited 되어왔다는 의미가 아니라 과거 특정 시점에 discredited 되어왔다는 의미로 좁혀짐.

 

 

다양한 언어에서 왼쪽을 뜻하는 단어는 부정적인 의미를 갖고 있고 종교의 왼손 배척도 공공연하다.

cf) 종교는 인간의 본성에 속한다. : Religion is part of human nature. 여기서 Religion은 불가산으로 사용함. 그러나 원래 문장에서의 종교는 이슬람, 기독교 등의 종교를 의미하기 때문에 가산명사로 사용함. 

2. Religions are also openly hostile to left-handedness.

3. Religions demonize left-handedness. 

 

이브는 왼손으로 선악과를 땄고, 예수가 십자가에 못박힐 때 왼쪽 도둑은 끝내 회개하지 않았다.

-> 

1. Eve used her left hand to pick the forbidden fruit. (the forbidden fruit 의 the는 "그" 선악과)

2. Eve picked the forbidden fruit with her left hand.

1. , and the thief that was crucified (on the cross) to the left of Jesus didn't repent. 

2. , and the thief that was crucified on the cross to the left of Jesus refused to repent. 

3. the thief crucified on Jesus' left died without repenting. 

 

이슬람권에선 왼손을 불결하게 여겨 왼손잡이가 인구의 1%도 안 된다고 한다. 

The percentage of the left-handed in the Islamic culture is under 1% because they consider the left hand a negative sign. 

->

1. In the Muslim world, the left hand is considered dirty and, therefore, less than 1% of Muslims are left-handed. 

- consider는 as 쓰면 안됨 to be는 가능.

- less than 1% of Muslims: less가 나오는 경우는 1% 보다 적은 0.9%에 집중해서 less로 사용한 경우고, 1% of Muslims 의 사람수에 집중을하면 fewer도 가능하긴함. 그러나 less가 더 논리적이라고 볼 수 있음. 

 

하지만 역사 속에는 다빈치, 나폴레옹, 모차르트, 뉴턴, 아인슈타인처럼 뛰어난 능력을 보이는 왼손잡이들이 많이 있었다.

미국의 오바마대통령도 왼손잡이다.

- left-handed 를 he is a leftie로 쓸 수도 있긴함. 속어의 느낌이 있고. 빨갱이의 느낌이 있음. 

 

왼손잡이가 머리가 좋다는 통념 때문에 요즘엔 왼손 사용을 권장하는 부모도 많다. 그러나 이는 잘못된 속설이다. 

Many people say that the left-handed are smarter than the right-handed, so that many parents advised their children to use the left hand. However, it is a wrong wisdom. 

-> 

1. Because of the belief that left handed people are smart ~. : 쓸 수 있지만 주절이 뒤에 나오기 때문에 지양하는 것이 좋다. Because of 구가 길어진 경우에. 

2. Believing that being left-handed makes one smart, many parents encourage their children to use the left hand. 

3. Many parents encourage their children to use the left hand in the belief that doing so would make them smart. 

- In the belief that 이 문장 앞에 나와도 되긴하지만 잘 안나옴. 뒤에 붙여주는게 좋은 문장임. 

4. But it is a myth. 

 

왼손잡이 위인들이 예술 과학에서 두각을 나타내자 우뇌와 연결된 왼손잡이가 창의적이란 통념이 생겼지만 뇌의 어느 부분이 창의와 이성을 담당하는지는 명확히 밝혀내지 못했다.

- Islam: (종교로서의) 이슬람 / Muslim: Islam 종교를 믿는 사람

- Islamist은 단순히 이슬람교도를 칭하는 말이 아님.

- Chrisian, Muslim 모두 명사와 형용사로 같이 쓰임.

- Jew는 명사, Jewish는 형용사로 다름. 

ex) He's a Jew. / He's Jewish. 

 

3. 그 사람은 이슬람교도입니다. 

- He's an Islam. (이슬람 or 이즐람) (x) / He's a Muslim. (머-슬럼 or 무즐럼) (o)

- Muslim is a person who follows the religion of Islam. 

- Muslims are people who follow Islam.

- People who believe in Islam are called Muslims.

How many Muslims are there in the world? (o)

How large is the Muslim population in the world? (o)
